I have recently talked to two different government employees trying to deal
with the the interactions of baby harbor seal pups and clam diggers on
Washington coastal beaches (primarily Ocean Shores). One National Marine
Fisheries Service officer is currently working 7 days a week responding to
calls about abandoned seal pups. He gets many calls where he can hear the
splashing of the seal pup in the bath tub of the person's home or motel room.
There is a huge desire in many people to pick these pups up and try to care
for them.
>From a wildlife management and public relations standpoint, it is a bad
situation. The seal pups should be left on the beach.
