Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Thursday May 16. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at

Unsettled weather during the week apparently displaced or grounded many
migrants. Mt. Tabor Park in Portland was particularly outstanding, both in
species and numbers. On May 15 a female TENNESSEE WARBLER was closely
observed there.

Many RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and BONAPARTE'S GULLS were reported along the
coast and in the western Oregon interior valleys. A SABINE'S GULL was with
a flock of BONAPARTE'S at the Kirtland Sewage Ponds near White City May 14.


The May 11 offshore boat trip out of Newport found a flat ocean and
cooperative birds. FULMARS, SOOTY and PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS, a
FORK-TAILED STORM-PETREL, and some SABINE'S GULLS were seen. Good numbers
of BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSS were also recorded. Twelve COMMON TERNS were at
Yaquina Bay May 13.

Shorebirds continue to move in good numbers. On May 12 a WILLET was on the
Bayocean Flats at Tillamook Bay. An AVOCET was near Astoria May 11. A
couple of WILSON'S PHALAROPE, a BITTERN, and several RED-NECKED PHALAROPE
were in the Canby area during the week. A pair of SHOVELERS with a brood of
chicks were on the Mollala Sewage Ponds May 10.

WESTERN KINGBIRDS are still being found in the Willamette Valley including
several near Canby May 14. LAZULI BUNTINGS were reported from many areas. A
winter plumaged SANDERLING was at the E.E. Wilson wildlife Area north of
Corvallis May 14. WHITE-THROATED and GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS continue to be
reported.

Nesting BLACK TERNS were noted May 11 at a private farm pond near
Corvallis. This is a regular nesting site for the species along with other
eastern Oregon type waterbirds.

Over 100 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and two WILSON'S PHALAROPES were in the
Eugene area May 14. A BLACK PHOEBE was in Sutherlin May 12. Two CASPIAN
TERNS were at the log pond along the I5 Freeway near there May 11. A
RED-EYED VIREO was reported from the Tokatee Ranger Station east of
Roseburg May 11.

On May 11 four BLACK SWIFTS were two and a half miles east of Rowena on the
Old Columbia River Highway. They, and many VAUX'S SWIFTS, were performing
courtship flights. Good numbers of LEWIS' WOODPECKERS were flycatching all
along the road from Mosier to The Dalles that day.

A WILLET was at the Wasco Sewage Ponds May 9. An AVOCET was at Hatfield
Lake near Bend May 13, and three BLACK-NECKED STILTS were at the east end
of Ochoco Lake near Prineville May 10. The large TRICOLORED BLACKBIRD
colony at Painted Cove in the Painted Hills National Monument were feeding
young May 12. They will leave the area when the young fledge.

A bright male BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD was coming to a feeder in the town
of Moro May 11. Many CALLIOPE HUMMERS were reported over the week-end. The
WESTERN SCRUB-JAY continues to be seen in Moro.

A BLACK-THROATED SPARROW was along Highway 20 at the east edge of Deschutes
County and a WOOD DUCK was at the Hines Sewage Ponds May 13.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, the GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE, and the HUTTON'S VIREO
were at Malheur Refuge Headquarters over the past week-end. BOBOLINKS are
back at their colony at Ukiah but were not reported from Malheur.
