This is Dale Goble with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Kas is off on a trip and as is traditionally the case, when Kas goes on a
trip no one phones the hotline. So this week's report is rather short.

Bill and Nancy LaFramboise found a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW on
Centennial Trail just east of Spokane. This is the same area where Clay-
coloreds have been found for the past several years. Take Exit 296 off
I-90 and go north. Park in the gravel parking lot on the east side of
Harvard Road and walk Centennial Trail west along the Spokane River for
less than 1 mile. Walk past the 5 mile mark painted on the trail (i.e., 5
miles from the Idaho border) and look/listen for the bird to the south
(i.e, left of the trail). The bird was singing from a bush approximately
100 ft from the trail. See Washington DeLorme page 89 C-7.5.

Other birds of interest were:
EASTERN KINGBIRD (at Centennial Trail); an uncommon DOUBLE-
CRESTED CORMORANT at Turnbull NWR; a pair of SANDHILL CRANES
and several BLACK TERNS also at Turnbull.

In addition, Dan and Ila Svingen made a swing through southwestern
Idaho this past weekend. They found numerous Curlews, Short-Eared
Owls, and Grasshoppper Sparrows in the Midvale/Indian Valley area. In
addition, there were upwards of 600 Northern Phalarope and American
Avocet and Black-necked Stilt at Indian Creek Reservoir. The Midvale are
is at Idaho DeLorme p 42 C-2; Indian Creek Reservoir is just off I-84
between Boise and Mountain Home, Idaho DeLorme p. 25, A-4.5
