On Saturday morning, May 25 around 7 am, two scrub jays were in the trees
by the Perry Street childrens center and Woodruff park in Olympia. I
have read of previous sightings in the downtown library/post office area.
The birds seemed to be focused on some modest sized firs between the
children's center and Eagan's drive-in, and were loudly calling at the
top of the tree, then slinking more quietly into the lower branches.
I'll keep an eye on them for possible nesting. These are a state first
for me, but a bird I know extremly well from Californina.
directions: This area is just off Harrison as you go west out of
down-town Olympia. At the top of the hill is a light (Perry Street). To
the right (North) is Woodruff Park and the Childrens center.

Other interesting visits: The same morning I was visited in the garden by
8 cedar waxwings preening and softly calling while loading up on holly
fruit. Two more returned for an evening snack, providing our 1-1/2 year
old daughter with her first really exciting bird look (or at least as
exciting as ducks, which she adores mostly because "duckie" is one of the
few words she can say). Sarah spent several minutes pointing the waxwings out to anyone she saw. Earlier this
week, while heading home at 5 pm, a very bold weasel ran across the Evergreen
entrance road at high speed.
