There is no "chat" group for the Carolinas. The most
exciting birding is probably at the Coast (Cape Hatteras)
at the moment. It depends on what you are looking for.
John Fussell has written a splendid book on birding the
coastal areas. Check your local library or buy one at
the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge headquarters.

I didn't see the original query, but if the person
posting will send a message indicating where they will
be and/or what they want to see, I may be able to
help. For instance, I have reliable directions for
Red-cockaded woodpeckers in the Pine Hurst area, as
well as some spots at the coast. Generally speaking
the Piemont area (mid-state) is in the
fall/winter/early spring doldrums with nothing very
unusual showing up. I realize, however, that someone
from Washington isn't necessarily looking for
excitement. They may be looking for the humdrum &
ordinary local "specialities". Brown headed
nuthatches as a case in point-- common in the
Piedmont, but not until you get your lunch out to eat
it, as a rule.
