Not being from Washington, I can't lend any insights about their status
west of the Cascades. However, I have a question about the plumage of the
bird. Brenda, when you say that you believe it was juvenile, did it have a
brown head with bown spilling down onto the chest? It is my understanding
that Red-naped's should have molted entirely into adult plumage, but
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker's keep this juvenile plumage. Can others confirm
this for me? If not, do people know of critera for seperating juveniles of
the two species?
