This is Deb Dumroese, filling in for Kas who's got a wicked case of
laryngitis, with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

The spot this week was Mann Lake near Lewiston, ID. Lots of folks
called in good birds, here are the highlights. Between 1 and 3
OLDSQUAW have been on the lake between Sunday, November 3 and
today, November 8. DUNLIN have been present all week as well; the
high count of 4 on Sunday had dropped to 1 today. Folks hitting the
lake for the Oldsquaw were ecstatic to find a SNOWY OWL patrolling
near the model airplane club on the lake's east side. First seen on
Tuesday, November 5, the bird was seen through Thursday, but may
still be lurking around. Deb Buetler reports 3 SANDHILL CRANE there
on Monday, and those birds persisted until yesterday, but they may be
lurking in the fields around the lake as well. TUNDRA SWAN counts
ranged from 1 to 7. Today at the lake, Dan Svingen reports an
immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK and a PRAIRIE FALCON were present,
along with 2 GREATER SCAUP.

To get to Mann Lake, take US 12 west into Lewiston, cross the
Clearwater Bridge and immediately turn left toward East Lewiston.
Follow Main Street to the blinking yellow light and turn right onto
Lindsay Creek Road. Stay right at the Y and follow Lindsay Creek until
it dead ends at Grelle. Turn left onto Grelle, and just after Grelle
makes a 20 mph right turn, turn left toward the lake. Head straight about
1.3 miles to the dead end and the parking area. ID DeLorme p. 54, A1.

While you're in Lewiston, you better check the big levee pond as well.
On Tuesday, November 5, Clare and Sharon Wiser spied a single WHITE-
WINGED SCOTER. To reach the levee pond, take US 12 west into
Lewiston and stay right around the first traffic light. At the second
light, which is 18th Street, follow the signs for the US 12 west bypass.
In about 1.2 miles, you'll reach the parking lot for the big levee pond.
On Sunday, Dan Svingen reported about 200 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE in the river
at the grain terminal, easily scoped from the top of the levee here at the
pond. Dan also reports a single CATTLE EGRET near the intersection of US
95 and Nez Perce County Road 2 (the one signed for the Lewiston Roundup
Grounds), just south of Lapwai, ID, on November 3.

Along Central Grade Road in northern Nez Perce County on Monday,
November 4, Kas saw 5 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCH about 1 mile
south of the Nez Perce / Latah County line. You may access this road
north and east of the Clearwater Power Company offices in northeastern
Lewiston off US 95. ID DeLorme p. 54, A1

BLUE JAYS are in their annual spot in north-northeastern Moscow, north
of Homestead and in and around F Street between Orchard and Polk.
They are arriving with some regularity early mornings at a feeder at 824
Leath, home of Bill and Joan Wykoff. There's an alley behind the house
where you can stalk them. Dale Goble also reports them coming to his
feeder at 728 Homestead. These two homes are only about 2 blocks
apart, the way the Blue Jay flies. Dave Holick also reports a single
BLUE JAY coming to his feeder on the south side of Moscow Mountain.

I had two reports of WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKERS this week.
Sharon Ritter reports a single bird 15.3 miles east of Riggins up the
Salmon River. ID DeLorme p. 50, b as in buteo, 3. Earl Chapin reports
a single, male bird in Priest River this past week for a rare northern
Idaho record.

Finally, a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL is patrolling the yard of Tom Besser
at the base of Moscw Mountain. Tom says you're welcome to try for
the bird. Give him a call at 208-882-6254.

Thanks to John and Marty Hirth, Pat Scott, Dale Goble, Dick Johnson
and Winnie Hepburn for their calls about birds at Mann Lake this past
week.

Good birding!
