Janet,
My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta in
Nov.,1990. A friend who is also a birder gave us the 1995 SUPPLEMENT to
FINDING BIRDS IN MEXICO as a wedding gift. I wish I could tell you where
this book was purchased but I have lost touch with that friend and I have
not seen it in any of the usual places. Good luck. You are welcome to borrow
it if you like. We may be in the Yakima area in 2 weekends to visit the
Yakima Training Facility. If not, I will be happy to mail it to you, on
loan. We found the book to be very helpful. Some of it was outdated by
development, as usual, but for the most part, it was one of the best wedding
gifts we received! Also, Peterson's A FIELD GUIDE TO MEXICAN BIRDS was
invaluable. If you can get it ahead of time, spend as much time as you can
checking out what is there, it's worth it. Every bird we saw was beautiful
and exciting. Groove-billed Anis are in the gutters like Starlings here! The
jungle is right there in town. Along with the usual parrots and macaws keep
an eye out for the many exciting varieties of reptiles. Walk around as much
as you can. Also, if you get a chance, rent one of the yellow jeeps. They
are pricey but well worth the freedom they give to get out of town and
really see some stuff. Be sure you are back before dark. Don't forget about
possible pelagic trips. It is very warm down there, even this time of year
and you can really see some great stuff.
Sorry, no help with the guide. We did all of our exploring ourselves
with the help of the previously mentioned books.
Next time we go, we'll try snorkeling and kayaking!!
I could go on and on about Puerto Vallarta but .......
If you have any questions or would like to borrow either of the
books, let me know.
Have a great trip.
