For the record, on Nov. 13 I revisited the site in Woodinville where (last
week) I saw the probable juvenile Red-naped Sapsucker. I was able to
relocate it and look at it closely. It was, indeed, a Red-naped Sapsucker.
There were the distinct black and white facial stripes, patchy red on the
crown and nape, and bright red on the throat. The upper breast was tinted a
faint orange and there was considerable scalloping on the breast. I also
could see some downy feathers on each wing, leading me to believe that it is
a juvenile. All the other markings were consistent with a Red-naped. I don't
know if this bird is just a late migrant or will be staying awhile, but I
know the owner of the site and she will keep an eye on it. In any case, next
month our community group will survey again.
