To add some information, one of the really incredible things about this
year is that these birds are being seen everywhere in California, not just
the coast. Crossbills, Evening Grosbeaks, Cassin's Finches and Clark's
Nutcrackers have shown up on the floor of the Central Valley, as well as in
the desert.

As for causes, there has been lots of discussion on Calbird, with no conclusion.
