This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for September
14, 1996. For any questions regarding LCBAS call Mike Lilga at 946-8966.

To bypass the announcement, push the star button on your phone and leave a
message after the tone.

Richard Smith of the (US) Fish and Wildlife Service, phone number
509-765-6125 is asking for any sightings of Bald Eagles using the trees in
the north end of Columbia Park. The Corps of Engineers (actually City of
Richland has applied to the COE and) would like to remove some of these
trees but perhaps could be dissuaded if enough use is known. Mr. Smith saw
an adult BALD EAGLE there on November 7.

Ruth Fischer reported that as of November 8, the WESTERN SCRUB-JAY in East
Kennewick was still present. The bird frequents a brush pile adjacent to
1104 E 4th Place.

On November 9, Ron Lauderback (sp?) photographed a PEREGRINE diving on ducks
at Sacajawea State Park.

Also on November 9, the Yakima Delta yielded a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, 1
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3 LEAST, 1 very late BAIRD'S, and 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER,
26 DUNLIN, an adult THAYER'S GULL and 1 lone BARN SWALLOW.

Bill and Nancy LaFramboise birding from the Bateman Island causeway on
November 10 had the good fortune to see a PARASITIC JAEGER. It flew in from
the Yakima Delta and continued down river.

Dennis Rockwell reported that on November 11, 2 MEW GULLS were present on
the Kennewick Sewage Pond.

On November 12, Ruth Fischer, Nancy LaFramboise, and I (Bob Woodley) found
WE Johnson Park off Duportail Street in Richland to be quite birdy. Among
other things, we saw several BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, 1 WINTER AND 3
BEWICK'S WRENS, both GOLDEN-CROWNED and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, a VARIED
THRUSH, 2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW and a female CASSIN'S
FINCH.

SNOWY OWLS are getting closer to the Tri-Cities. Randy Hill reported a road
killed owl near Basin City on November 12. Tony Greager received a call
from Dave Abbott reporting an immature owl south of Kahlotus on November 12.
Lastly Mary Lilga received a call from Heath Brown who saw an adult owl east
of Eureka in Walla Walla county on November 7. Keep an eye out for these
handsome visitors from the north.

To report your own sightings, please give your name, phone number and
sightings after the tone. Thank you.
