Hunters on the Skagit (and the Nisqually) who are hunting upland species
(pheasants) are required by law to wear 400 sq. inches of "hunter orange."
Since they're frequently shooting at birds flying horizontally, perhaps
between you and them, it's a good idea to wear some yourself. "Brightly
colored" doesn't do it, or even "red"; it needs to be fluorecent orange to
get someone's attention. On the Big Ditch they're mostly duck hunters,
wearing camo or brown, and shooting into the sky; you might feel the gentle
rain of steel shot from above, but nothing directed at you horizontally.
Still, I think it's good practice to wear hunter orange during hunting
season, and especially during the big game season, elsewhere. You can get
an orange vest and/or hat at Warshal's, Big Five and other sporting goods
stores catering to hunters.
