Hi folks,

Got in the Winter 1996 issue (Vol 22 No 4) of Oregon Birds, published =
quarterly by the Oregon Field Ornithologists. Thought I'd share the =
contents for those interested.

The Records of the Oregon Bird Records Committee, 1995-1996. Harry =
Nehls. pp 99-103. A summary of 60 records; 51 were and 9 were not =
accepted. Clay-colored Sparrow has been dropped from the Oregon review =
list; Baltimore Oriole (newly re-split from Bullock's by AOU) is now on =
Oregon checklist and review list.

In Memoriam: Harriet Kofalk, 1937-1996. Alan Contreras. pg 103. Author =
of: "No Woman Tenderfoot: Florence Merriam Bailey, Pioneer Naturalist". =
She had been working on biography of mammologist Vernon Bailey when died =
in car accident in India in Feb.

Unusual Behavior of an Adult Bald Eagle at a Communal Roost Tree. Randy =
Ghormley. pg 104. On 19 February 1996, eagle observed to fly to the =
lower branch of a cottonwood tree, and hang from branch - Upside Down! - =
for 8 minutes, before flying off and relanding (right-side up) on the =
upper branches.

Sparrow Stroganoff. Donal B Miller. pg 105. Reprint of early 1900s USDA =
Farmers Bulletin No 493, with methods to prepare and cook English =
Sparrows (House Sparrow - Passer domesticus), an introduced exotic =
species.

David Marshall wrote (pg 108) a promotion of the "Teaming With Wildlife" =
fish and wildlife diversity funding initiative. Basically a excise tax =
on outdoor recreation equipment, binoculars, bird feed etc. to support =
non-game programs.

The 1996 OFO Fall Weekend at Malheur. Sheran Jones. pg 109. Held 20-22 =
September, 162 species seen by 20-25 participants.

20th Upper Nestucca Christmas Bird Count, Oregon, 17 December 1995. =
Larry R Scofield. pg 112. CBC was established under agreement between =
Salem Audubon and Bureau of Land Mgmt to monitor Spotted Owl =
populations; 1995 marked end of 20-year agreement. No owl count was =
done in 1995 due to windstorm that closed all roads or washed them out =
completely with heavy rains. 830 individual birds of 39 species seen =
during the day - using only the 3 opened "main" roads.
