In Fort Nelson when I lived there, screeching young GHOW were a September
thing. I just put it down to the break up of the family unit at that time.
Young ones want fed by mom and dad but the parents are trying to kiss them
off at that point so they ignore them. The youngs ones complain more loudly
until they eventually get the idea and leave the home territory. The
process took a couple of weeks. And yes, I remember the great Jim Grant of
Vernon, BC setting me straight on GHOW vocalizations many years ago. Even
though the male's body size is smaller than the female, he has the larger
syrinx so his vocalizations are deeper than the female.
