This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for September

On September 15, Nancy LaFramboise and Dennis Rockwell found 5 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS and a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER among the shorebirds on the Yakima Delta.

On the same day, Bill and Nancy LaFramboise reported a GOLDEN EAGLE over his
south Richland yard. A great yard bird.

Kathy Criddle reported that the first returning (DARK-EYED) JUNCOS appeared
in her Richland yard on September 16.

On September 17, Nancy LaFramboise and Deborah Ellis observed a
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and 6-10 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS on the Yakima Delta
with the more common shorebirds.

Mary Lilga found 8-10 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS along the Yakima River near the
Kiona-Benton City bridge on September 17. This species is already the
dominant warbler species locally.

Also on September 17, Diane Ackerman observed a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE along
the Audubon Nature Trail in Columbia Park (in Kennewick)

Phyllis Ingram who lives just west of Prosser had a banner day in her yard
September 18 with a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER, 3 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 2
TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS, several YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a SPOTTED TOWHEE.

THE bird of this reporting period however is the WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH
which appeared in Margaret and Greg Greger's Richland yard on September 18
and was still present September 21. If it remains, try to see it. This is
only the 4th local record that I (Bob Woodley) am aware of (and the last one
was seen 21 years ago).

Lastly, Mike Denny noted a dark phase PARASITIC JAEGER on the Walla Walla
Delta on September 20 and 21, over 500 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at the
end of Humorist Road on the McNary Refuge September 21, and several hundred
VAUX'S SWIFTS that roost in a chimney at a Walla Walla church.
