Kathleen Hunt asked about a hoot owl on an island in southern Maine...
"hoot-hoothoothoot-hoothoothoot-hoot"
... and wondered: "What do y'all think? Would this be a female great
horned?"

Seems like it to me. But my question is, Which island?
I just read an AP story about Maine just "redefining" and recounting its
islands and coming up with something like 4500! Most of those are itty
bitty things and I think southern Maine has fewer than its fair share. And,
of course, few are inhabited.
Great Horned Owls can be big tern predators out there, BTW, although the
island in question probably has no tern colony.
