The Saturday, October 5th Protection Island pelagic cruise, which had a
flock of Yakima Valley Audubon members aboard, sighted the following
species :

Glaucus Winged Gull
Heerman's Gull
Mew Gull
Bonaparte Gull
Ring Billed Gull (juv)
White Wing Scoyer
Surf Scoter
Common Murre
Harlequin Duck
Pigeon Guillemont
Pelagic Cormorant
Double Crested Cormorant
Red Brested Merganser
Black Turnstone
Sanderling
Common Loon
Pacific Loon
Horned Grebe
Western Grebe
Red Necked Grebe
Rhinoceros Auklet
Belted Kingfisher
Great Blue Heron
Bald Eagle
Rock Dove
Starling
Northwestern Crow

Additionally , we observed many harbor seals and

midway between Protection I. & the Point Wilson Lighthouse we observed a
rather large Northern Sea Lion eating silver salmon. This event had also
caught the attention of approx. 12 Glaucus winged gulls who were hanging
around trying to find scraps. The bait fish follow the current edges, the
salmon follow the bait, the sea lion follow the salmon & the opportunistic
gulls follow everything
