Hi folks,

Just got in the Fall 1996 issue (Vol 24 No 3) of the Wildlife Society =
Bulletin, a quarterly publication of The Wildlife Society. The Bulletin =
is less 'technical' than the Journal of Wildlife Mgmt, the society's =
other quarterly, and focuses on "perspectives on wildlife conservation =
and sustainable use." This volume is a special issue dedicated to =
"Predators". Here's the bird related articles....

De-listing the American peregrine falcon: is it premature? Joel E =
Pagel, Douglas A Bell and Brian E Norton. pp 429-435. Authors suggest =
that instead of de-listing the species from "endangered" under the ESA, =
it might be more appropriate to down-list the species as "threatened", =
and give a number of reasons.

Golden eagle predation on domestic calves. Robert L Phillips, John L =
Cummings, Gloria Notah, and Curt Mullis. pp 468-470. Published =
eye-witness accounts of a golden eagle killing a calf are limited to a =
single observation in California in the 1940s. The authors report a =
severe case of eagle predation on calves on the Tigner Brothers Ranch in =
Socorro County, New Mexico from 1987-89. Animal Damage Control =
personnel confirmed 6 calves killed and 48 injured, mostly between =
March-October. The ranch owner reported an additional 6 calves killed =
and 13 injured from eagle attacks. Photo documentation of a 41kg calf =
with talon punctures and hemorrhaging at base of skull. In March 1994, =
ADC staff reported 3 calves attacked (1 died) near Vale, Oregon. =
Authors believe that this type of eagle hunting behavior is unusual and =
site specific.

Detecting trends in raptor counts: power and Type I error rates of =
various statistical tests. Jeff S Hatfield, William R Gould IV, Brett A =
Hoover, Mark R Fuller, and Edward L Lindquist. pp 505-515. Under their =
assumptions, the linear regression t-test should be the most powerful =
test. Under other assumptions, Pollard's t-test or a nonparametric test =
could be more powerful. Collin's linear regression permutation test, =
Lehmann's test and Mann's test do not assume normality of the counts and =
regression residuals; one of these may be preferable for analyzing data =
in which normality assumptions were violated.

Methods for capturing forest birds of prey. Russell K Thorstrom. pp =
516-520. Discussed distribution of 191 captures of 15 raptor species =
among 7 trap types; Bal-chatri, Envelope Trap, Noose Carpet, Swedish =
goshawk trap, Wire hoop trap, Noose pole, and mist net, in Tikal =
National Park, Guatemala, 1989-1993.

Miniature video-board camera used to inspect natural and artificial nest =
cavities. Glen A Proudfoot. pp 528-530. Author describes camera, 10m =
telescoping pole, use and cost ($750); used to avoid climbing trees or =
carrying ladders when studying nest cavities.

Surveying woodland hawks with broadcasts of great horned owl =
vocalizations. James A Mosher and Mark R Fuller. pp 531-536. =
Pre-recorded vocalizations of owls broadcast into wooded habitat along =
roadside survey routes in Ohio, Maryland and Minnesota resulted in as =
many detections of resident Red-shouldered Hawks and Cooper's Hawks as =
broadcasts of each conspecific calls.

Plus, lots of neat articles on mountain lion, wolves, bears, foxes, etc.
