(I haven't read any of today's postings
because I'm on digest mode.)

Wish Jerry would give us a list of where to
find all that stuff mentions above!

---

Mailing lists for birders can be of great
help when there are persons onboard with the
wanted information ready at hand. Often most
subscribers haven't got the time nor the
resources necessary for further digging. Some
discussions therefore seldom seem to get us
anywhere further.

Previously on BirdChat, several subscribers
have offered different definitions of and
explanations on the origin of 'jizz', 'GISS,
etc. (nov/dec 94, aug 95, aug/sept 96). When
confronted, few are able to tell specifically
from where they've got their information. I
believe most versions can be traced back to
earlier bird literature. For example, when
somebody today say they've heard birder
hearsay about "gestalt birding", it's likely
that "The Western Bird Watcher", 1985, by
Kevin J. Zimmer, has been the original
influence.

I have mentioned this several times
previously on Tweeters: If you want stuff on
bird jizz, you should visit the web pages at

http://home.sol.no/tibjonn/jizztext.htm

Via the submenu there, you'll find pages with

o Coward's original piece, where he first
introduced the term 'jizz' to birdwatchers,

o David's article on the etymology of 'jizz',

o a page loaded with different definitions of
the term,

o a couple of RTP excerpts showing that he
actually believed in a WW2 RAF origin.

o and what one former WW2 RAF fighter pilot,
now living on an island next to me here in
South Norway, has to say about that
explanation.

*********

I wonder when Peterson FOR THE FIRST TIME
wrote about this 'origin of jizz' question,
or mentioned it in a speech. I'm surprised he
held that WW2 view, knowing of his close
contacts with british James Fisher way back.
