I was on the east slopes on the cascades today, mainly in the Rat Creek
fire area out of Leavenworth. Tweets might remember this fire better as
the isicle creek fire of July 1994. Anyway while I was being a good little
dendrology student and measuring the insect damage of scorched trees I had
white-headed woodpecker fly over. Apparently there are quite a bit of
woodpecker activy in this area (8 of the 10 dead trees showed signs of
woodpecker activity). Not a bad bird for a nonbirding day. Also typical
species of the dry forest were apparent:
Pygmy Nuthatch
Mountain Chickadee
California quail
Dark-eyed Junco
