A quick trip to Monterey provided some interesting, albeit rushed, birding.

On the way down on the salt flats of San Francisco Bay (Hwy 37) we had:

Black-necked stilt
White pelican

In the cow fields on the same road:

Brewers blackbirds

Father down 101 near Pescadero we had:

Brown pelicans (in fact there were several groups of brown pelicans
throughout the Monterey/Santa Cruz area)
Great egrets


At Laguna Seca campground east of Monterey:

California Quail
Anna's hummer
California towhee
Black phoebe (flitting about catching flies - great dusk-time entertainment)

Out at Pacific Grove while waiting for a (yuk!) job interview:

Winter plumage Willet
Black bellied plover (winter plumage)

Moss Landing produced:

American Avocet

Along Hwy 101 just north of Santa Cruz:

two Kestrals
several Mallards
several Coots
two Red-tails
one Harrier (female)

And, much to my delight in Half Moon Bay:

one Red-shouldered hawk

There were so many shorebirds I was sorry I didn't have Dennis' book and
several hours of free time.

But the birding was good, got a few life birds, but not the job. Oh well...
