An interesting twist of note to those of us U.S.-centric folks as well.
Until very recently I had the same reaction whenever I saw navy vessels
(particularly nuclear subs) plying local waters. Gunmetal gray ships of
various sorts can be seen on occasion out in the Strait of Juan de Fuca,
doing slow circles at just about the location of the aquatic international
border. I had the sarcastic thought, "So what do they think they're doing
out there - trying to round up stray Canadians?" Then one day a couple
weeks ago a navy vessel steamed past Point Wilson, heading out of Admiralty
Inlet, and I happened to notice the maple leaf fluttering astern. "Oh yeah
- they've got a navy, too!"
