Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday October 17. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls

Strong storms and unsettled weather during the week has brought heavy
southward movements along the Oregon coast with Loons, scoters, pelicans,
shearwaters, and geese being reported. HERRING and THAYER'S GULL reports
also increased during the week.

On October 13 a number of white-bellied shearwaters were seen among the
shearwater flocks just off Tierra del Mar, north of Pacific City. Those
identified to species were BULLER'S SHEARWATERS. The next day they were
again seen there and at Cape Lookout to the north.

On October 10 a SCRUB JAY visited a feeder in Cape Meares Village near
Tillamook Bay.

Up to nine golden-plovers continue to be seen at the South Jetty of the
Columbia River. They appear to be evenly divided between AMERICAN and
PACIFIC. Now is a good time to compare these two hard to separate species.
A few LAPLAND LONGSPURS continue to be seen there, and on October 13 two
COMMON TERNS were at the shorebird flats there. A bright SHARP-TAILED
SANDPIPER was seen there October 16 and 17. On October 16 an unidentified
KINGBIRD and a NORTHERN SHRIKE were near Parking Lot A south of the jetty.
A CATTLE EGRET was along Highway 101 just south of the Youngs Bay Bridge
October 12.

Migrating sparrows continue to be reported throughout the state. An influx
of ROBINS was reported in the mid-town Portland area October 16. A MOUNTAIN
CHICKADEE visited a Newburg feeder October 13. A SNOW GOOSE was among a
migrant flock of CANADA GEESE at Minto-Brown Park in Salem October 12. A
SANDHILL CRANE was in Salem October 15. A late VAUX'S SWIFT was at Ankeny
NWR October 12.

Four CLARK'S NUTCRACKERS were on Marys Peak, in the Coast Range of Benton
County, October 16. A SURF SCOTER was on Diamond Lake in the Cascades south
of Crater Lake October 15.

A surprising HEERMANN'S GULL was on Mirror Pond in Bend October 12! It
didn't stay long. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found there the next day while
searching for the gull.

Both SNOW and WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were in Wheeler County October 12. A
NORTHERN SHRIKE and a late ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER were seen that day also.

On October 11 a PACIFIC LOON was on Goose Lake south of Lakeview.
