Judith,
The first thing to know about seasickness is that everybody gets
sick once in a while, though I admit never seeing Terry Wahl ill.
The second thing to know is that what works for one often doesnt
work for others, and with that caveat in mind, the following is my
routine:

Before you start, remember the ride back is almost always easier.
Wear an ear patch prescription device. I forget the name.
Eat lightly the night before and not at all in the morning.
Avoid the fumes at the stern.
Do bring simple food like water and saltines. Even if you dont eat
the saltines, you can bring them home and store them on top of the
refrigerator for at least five years.
Keep as busy as possible. When not pretending to see Laysans before
Terry does, I find taking pictures of my fellow sufferers a good
distraction from my own suffering. Photographs of fellow seasick and
better-birder sufferers are useful for trading for birding tips and
trips. In another life when I briefly feared not being replaced as
editor of the WOS newsletter, I had this distant thought of
threatening to run a multi-page photo spread from my pelagic
adventures. The thought worked as I was duly retired.

Good sailing...

Fred
