Two suggestions that I have not seen in the numerous responses to this
query: 1) Avoid looking down, especially if you go below deck. One
thing experienced sailors try to avoid is having to do work in the bilge
while underway. Looking down at all the bilge water with your head in
that position will usually induce an episode of "freestyle projectile
chumming". 2) If you can position yourself near the center of gravity of
the vessel, as opposed to being on the highest part of the boat or on
either end, this will reduce the total amount of translational movement
your body will be doing. This is more pronounced on larger vessels and it
should not preceed measures like getting fresh air and the other
suggestions that have already been mentioned. If you are on a small craft
you are pretty much going to be tossed about mercilessly.
