On Saturday Oct. 19 I made a trip out to Tofino on the west coast of
Vancouver Island in hopes of finding birds that had been blown in from
the past storm. Although nothing extraordinary was seen, there were many
locally interesting birds.


In order of location;

AT THE AIRPORT:
Sandhill Crane a juvenile wandering around
Horned Lark two birds (rather yellow-faced)
American Kestrel one male
Peregrine one adult
Red-tailed Hawk one adult
Sharp-shinned Hawk one imm.
Lapland Longspur 14

AT THE MUNICIPAL POND:
Cackling Goose 1 'minima'
GWFR Goose 2 juv 'hanging out' with B.c.minima
Virginia Rail 1 adult eating insects along the grassy edge

AT WICKANINNISH BEACH:
Parasitic Jaeger 1 adult, light morph, flying due south
Surfbird 150
Black Turnstone 50
Black Oystercatcher 12

AT THE MUDFLATS:
Dunlin 600
Western Sand. 3 (late)
BB Plover 86 (record high count)
Osprey 1 (record late)
Peregrine 1imm (chased shorebirds then landed on mud, was harassed by a
group of Mew Gulls then a flock of 'dense?' C. Mergs landed on shore
beside it. It soon disappeared into thin air as they always do.

AT LONG BEACH PARKING LOT
Hermit Thrush 7
Yellow Warbler 1 (greenish type, young or female)

IN TOWN
Palm Warbler 1

LANDFILL SITE
YR Warbler 2
Raven 45
Wolves-- heard only
