Been getting a kick out of all the seasickness banter recently. In
the Land Of 10000 Lakes we have that problem only on the really large
lakes and Lake Superior.
But I must share something: recently wife and I were in the Pacific
Northwest and were walking by a charter boat that was about to take a
gaggle of fisherman out fishing. (I won't say just were this took
place in case the wrong eyes read this) The captian had the clients
crowded on the fantail and was briefing them. First no-no: he had
the engine running and the fumes were even reaching me standing on
the float, listening with amusement. Second no-no: he was
constantly puffing on a large pipe obviously stoked with dried dung
beetles. I could see people turn their heads whenever a cloud of it
would drift thru them. Third no-no: in an apparent attempt at humor
he graphically described the puuking contest that was to ensue upon
departure, i.e. points would be deducted for puuking into the wind or
not making it to the head.
I could see that everyone onboard was attempting smiles but silently
wondering how the hell they could get their money back and split!
When the boat pulled away from the float everyone was sitting down,
looking grim. From my limited experiences afloat most people are
standing and dorking around the boat as it departs. Watching the
boat slip away I couldn't help but think of it as some sort of
maritime Dante's Inferno...."abandon all hope you who depart thusly."
Probably got served creamed spinach and buttered squash for lunch.
