Subject: BirdBox transcript 19-23 Oct 96

Lisa Smith has spoiled us with her effortless-seeming transcripts of the
BirdBox for many months. She is taking sabbatical now. We are scrambling
to put together a BBB (BirdBox Bunch) to continue this indispensable
service. The hope is to constitute a panel of five to ten scribes and
establish a loose rotation among them so that nobody has to do it for more
than a week or ten days at a stretch, and we can all spell one another.

Volunteers are welcome! Please let me know if you'd like to join the
team.

In the interim since Lisa signed off Russell Rogers has been taking up the
slack in addition to his many other commitments, and he will be posting a
transcript of retrospective reports soon. I stepped into the rotation on
Sunday. My first batch follows (beginning with a late posting on the
19th).

6:56 p.m. October 19th - This is Scott Downes at 361-7073. Today the two
CATTLE EGRETS in their traditional spot were spotted in the morning, also
this evening. Although no luck with the HUDSONIAN GODWIT we did have a
juvenile RED KNOT which to me is fairly late. That's about it. Good luck
and good birding!

5:26 p.m. October 20th - Bob Norton from Port Angeles, 928-3053. SNOWY
OWL was present today in the log raft in Port Angeles harbor as viewed
from Ediz Hook. As you drive out Ediz Hook park at the 20 MPH sign not
long before you get to the rest room and toilet house. As you look out
there is an empty circle outlined by a log boom. It was in the middle of
the raft to the right, or west, of the open space. From the amount of
black spotting my guess is that this is a young adult. Thank you.

6:19 P.M. October 20th - This is Ruth Sullivan, 564-7419. Today in the
crab pond in Sequim I saw the bird, the SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER, between
nine and eleven. He was there the whole time, I mean it was forever.
Also we had a EURASIAN WIGEON on the sound. I have a concern this bird is
not the same than the one on Lopez Island because his bill was shorter and
also he didn't have the red... [message cut off].

7:37 p.m. October 20th - Hi. Ed Deal in Seattle at 723-4742. Today one
of the CATTLE EGRETS was relocated on the Samish Flats in the block
bordered by Chuckanut Drive, Sunset, Thomas, and Field Roads. Safest
viewing is from the last three roads. Typically associating with a herd
of dairy cattle. Also on Fir Island the BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS are
back at their traditional roost site, and along Padilla Bay Reserve tens
of thousands of ducks jammed in there, mostly dabblers. That's it. Good
luck! Bye.

11:15 p.m. October 20th. Hi. This is Steve Mlodinow. Today Jim Flynn,
Steve Pink, and I went out to the San Juan Islands. On the ferry ride
east of Orcas but within San Juan County we had five PARASITIC JAEGERS and
an ANCIENT MURRELET. At American Camp we had a handful of SKY LARKS and a
LAPLAND LONGSPUR and an OSPREY. And that's about it. Good luck and good
birding!

10:20 a.m. October 21st - Hello. This is Scott Atkinson reporting a few
birds from Skagit County for yesterday, October 20th. At Washington Park
near Anacortes a single ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD and about 300 COMMON MURRES
offshore. At March Point five PARASITIC JAEGERS in with a large flock of
BONAPARTE'S [GULLS] looking toward what I guess is Hat Island. A single
SNOW BUNTING also at March Point and 18 BLACK TURNSTONES. That's all.
Bye bye.

10:42 a.m. October 21st - This is Rick Sanders, 567-4144. On Saturday and
again on Sunday John Friars and I led a trip on Vashon. We saw two
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE in a pond right behind the cemetery, and near
Quartermaster Harbor in a lake one late COMMON TERN and one EARED GREBE.
Thank you.

1:49 p.m. October 21st - Hello. This is Ted Peterson in Lynnwood. An
update from the Edmonds fishing pier. The CLARK'S GREBE continues to be
found fairly close in. Theres a few ANCIENT MURRELETS starting to show
up, and this morning there was a male OLDSQUAW inside the marina. Thank
you.

4:30 p.m. October 21st - Hello. This is Patrick Sullivan along with Ruth
Sullivan reporting from Tacoma, Washington at area code 206-564-7419, also
including Craig Kemper. The SNOWY OWL at Ediz Hook in Clallam County that
was originally observed on Saturday was again observed today between 12:00
and 12:30 p.m., 0.3 miles from the last stop sign at the pulp mill. At
the Three Crabs restaurant one GYRFALCON and three EURASIAN WIGEON were
observed along with four PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and one NORTHERN SHRIKE.
Thank you. Good luck and good birding!

4:34 p.m. October 21st. Hi. This is Steve Mlodinow. I am moving within
Everett and I will have a new phone number. That number will be
206-514-5874 for any of those who care. Good luck and good birding!

8:00 p.m. October 21st. Vic Nelson. Today at Point No Point, as always
at the northeast tip of the Kitsap Peninsula, I had a [WESTERN] SCRUB-JAY
in the yard.

8:54 a.m. October 22nd. Hi. This is Greg Toffic. Yesterday I went to
Snohomish to Blackmans Lake which yearly begins to fill up with waterfowl
shortly after the beginning of hunting season. Mostly there were dabblers
in there, and not huge concentrations, however there were a few divers
including a couple of CANVASBACKS and one female REDHEAD.
