Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday October 24. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.

On October 19 a BLACK-HEADED GULL was observed at a small pond just south
of Grass Valley in Sherman County. When last seen it was flying southward.
It has not been relocated.

A BLUE JAY visited a feeder near Sandy October 19 and 20, but it apparently
moved on and has not been seen since.

Good movements continue along the coast with loons, scoters, pelicans,
Kittiwakes, and Heermann's Gulls moving southward. PACIFIC LOONS in
particular are conspicuous.

A group of 16 MARBLED GODWITS were at Siletz Bay and up to 28 were at
Yaquina Bay during the week. A VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW was at Yaquina Bay
October 20, and a RED KNOT was there October 21. On October 20 an OLDSQUAW
was at Netarts Bay.

Up to three CATTLE EGRETS have been along Wireless Road, south of Astoria,
lately. Shorebird numbers are holding up well at the South Jetty of the
Columbia River. A ROCK SANDPIPER was on the shorebird flats there October
18. The SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was regularly seen there up to October 19.
An ANCIENT MURRELET was off the jetty that day. The NORTHERN SHRIKE
continues to be seen near parking lot A.

A late TURKEY VULTURE was over Beaverton October 18. A male BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAK visited a feeder in Portland October 19, and a RUFOUS or ALLEN'S
HUMMINGBIRD was at a feeder in Portland's West Hills October 21. A MOUNTAIN
CHICKADEE came to a feeder in Gladstone October 20.

Up to 29 GREAT EGRETS have been seen during the week at Smith Lake in North
Portland. On October 20 a female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was on the Columbia
River at Hayden Island in North Portland. Three SURF SCOTERS and an EARED
GREBE were on the Molalla Sewage Ponds October 22. On October 20 a SURF
SCOTER and a flock of TREE SWALLOWS were at Jackson Bottom in Hillsboro,
and HORNED and EARED GREBES were on Roslyn Lake, near Sandy.

On October 20 VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were observed at Baskett Slough NWR, at
the E.E. Wilson SWA north of Corvallis, and at the Philomath Sewage Ponds.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was at Baskett Slough October 19, and 15 EARED GREBES
were on the Philomath Ponds October 20. A COMMON LOON, a SURF SCOTER, and
HORNED and EARED GREBES were at the Philomath Ponds October 18. Several
WESTERN GULLS were at Fern Ridge Reservoir October 20.

A HEERMANN'S GULL was at the mouth of Hood River October 19. Nearby were a
female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER and a RED-NECKED GREBE. Good numbers of birds
are now gathering about the John Day Dam, including CLARK'S, EARED, and
RED-NECKED GREBES. A CLARK'S GREBE was at the Pine Hollow Reservoir near
Wamic October 20.

On October 20 a PACIFIC LOON, a CLARK'S NUTCRACKER, and two late SWAINSON'S
THRUSHES were at Tumalo Reservoir west of Bend. On October 23 an OLDSQUAW
was at Hatfield Lake near Bend.
