In our program last year, we read "Naturalist," which is a terrific
book, though some of our more jaded students were cynical about Wilson's
"boy scout" enthusiasm and determination. We also read Heinrich's
"Ravens in Winter," which is a great story of scientific discovery, as he
tried to understand the feeding behavior of ravens. Weiner's book is a
first-rate exposition of modern thinking about evolution and the research
that some people are doing, especially about the Grants' work on Galapagos
finches. Also, think about:

Stap, Don. A Parrot without a Name: The Search for the Last
Unknown Birds on Earth. Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1990.

This is largely about the late Ted Parker. Though I don't have the exact
reference, consider also Diane Ackermann's book "The Moon by
Whalelight." She is a gutsy woman who goes everywhere in search of
natural history experiences, and she writes about them beautifully.
