This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

At Mann Lake near Lewiston, ID, on October 20, Dan Svingen reports 6
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 1 ROSS' GOOSE, at least a dozen
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, and 5 DUNLIN. The same day, John and
Marty Hirth added a SNOW GOOSE, a CLARK'S GREBE, and a PRAIRIE
FALCON. To get to Mann Lake, take US 12 west into Lewiston, cross
the Clearwater Bridge and immediately turn left toward East Lewiston.
Follow Main Street to the blinking yellow light and turn right onto
Lindsay Creek Road. Stay right at the Y and follow Lindsay Creek until
it dead ends at Grelle. Turn left onto Grelle, and just after Grelle
makes a 20 mph right turn, turn left toward the lake. Head straight about
1.3 miles to the dead end and the parking area. Idaho DeLorme p. 54, A1.

The Hirths also report a female HARLEQUIN DUCK at the big levee pond
(aka West Pond) in Lewiston on October 20. To get the pond, take US
12 west into Lewiston, cross the Clearwater Bridge and stay right of the
first traffic light. The next traffic light is 18th Avenue and is marked
for US 12 West to Clarkston. Turn right and follow this almost a mile to
the big pond.

Terry Little reports he's been watching a pair of WHITE-HEADED
WOODPECKERS for the past three weeks near Tumtum, WA, northwest
of Spokane. More specifically, take WA 291 northwest from Spokane.
About 6 miles past Tumtum you'll come to the Long Lake Recreation
Area and Campground on the left (south) side of the highway. About
100 yards before this, there's a road taking off to the north toward
Ford. Follow this up about a half-mile until you see a sign on the right
side that says "No camping-No campfires." Follow the road / trail back
about 300 yards to a turnaround spot and the birds. WA DeLorme p.
88, AB 2.5.

A HARRIS' SPARROW was seen by Phil Bartley in Columbia Park in
Kennewick, WA, on October 20. The bird was along Audubon Nature
Trail. Phil also reports a SURF SCOTER on the Columbia River behind
the Shilo Inn in Richland, WA.

John Fields had some great sightings at his feeder while camping at
Madame Dorian Park near the Walla Walla River Delta in western Walla
Walla County, WA. A COMMON GRACKLE visit the feeder on October
20 and a BLUE JAY was present from October 12 through at least the
15th. The delta is just north of the junction of US 12 and US 730,
about 30 miles west of Walla Walla, and if I remember correctly, the
park is also just north of this junction. Also in the vicinity, Mike
Denny reports 4 STILT SANDPIPERS were in Overview Pond on October 19.
This pond is 0.125 miles east of the US 12 / US 730 junction along US
12 on the north side of the road. On October 23 at the delta itself, Mike
and MerryLynn saw 17 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 3 GREATER WHITE-
FRONTED GEESE, and 100 AMERICAN PIPITS. WA DeLorme p. 40, D1.

As of today, October 25, the sub-adult, male, ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD
was still in the yard at Mike and MerryLynn Denny's in College Place,
WA. The Denny's live at 323 Scenic View Drive if you'd like to take a
peak. If that's not enough for ya, Mike also reports a female CALLIOPE
HUMMINGBIRD there as well. And, for those of us worried about the
winter, Mike also reports MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE, STELLER'S JAY,
CASSIN'S FINCH and a BLUE JAY either in his yard or around Walla
Walla. The Denny's phone number is (509)-529-0080.

BLUE JAYS are invading! I had reports of 2 birds in the southeast
portion of Grangeville, ID. Call Dan Svingen at (208) 983-3447 for
details. Two more birds were reported near Sandpoint, ID according to
Earl Chapin. Another is along Hood Avenue in Richland, WA. Call Steve
Weiss at (509)-375-7458. Dale Goble and Bill Wykoff report a Moscow,
Idaho BLUE JAY near its annual spot in north-northeastern Moscow,
north of Homestead and in and around F Street between Orchard and
Polk. Pat Jacks has a BLUE JAY visiting her Pierce, ID bird feeder at
least 4 times a day. Her number is (208)-464-2172.

Finally, a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL and a COOPER'S HAWK have been
saving me a fortune in bird food. Both of these guys have been coming
with some regularity to my Moscow, ID feeder for the past 2 weeks.
They're not predictable, but you're more than welcome to come stroll
around our woods looking for them. Late afternoons seem best. Call me
at 208-883-0943.

Good birding!
