A friend and I were birding Spencer Island about three weeks ago on a
Saturday evening (that's Saturday night entertainment for bird geekers)
and watched a Peregrine devour some less fortunate bird on a snag just
north of the bridge to the island. In the waning light, we first thought
it was an osprey eating a fish, but after looking through a scope from
several different angles, we concluded it was a Peregrine ripping out
feathers. By the way, we had the whole island to ourselves--Saturday at
dusk is a good time to be there if you don't like crowds!

Thanks for the info on the Peregrine. Looked off my deck (in Mukilteo) last
week and saw what I thought was a female Kestrel (I didn't have my binoc or
glasses on) because of the streak on the face. Now, I'm wondering if it
wasn't a Peregrine. It was being harrassed by crows and swallows so it
didn't stay long. Today I saw what looked like a Sharp-shinned hawk fly-by
my feeder. A few minutes later I heard the cry of a Red-tailed hawk so went
out to look and saw the Sharp-shin and Red-tail circling in the air together
and then they flew off.
