Thought I'd share the contents of the Fall, 1996 issue of Oregon Birds =

Description of bird first seen 2 January 1996 at Newport, Lincoln Co. =
Many photos.

A Verified Breeding Record for Wilson's Phalarope at Baskett Slough =
National Wildlife Refuge, Polk County, Oregon. Stephen Dowlan. pg 74. =
Nest with 4 downy young found at Morgan Lake on 12 June 1994. First =
confirmed breeding in western Oregon.

The Northern Mockingbird becomes established in the Rogue Valley. Harry =
Nehls. pg 75. History of mockingbird expansion north from California. =
Rogue Valley had first recorded record in 1958, other records listed =
including first reported successful nesting of species in Oregon (in =
1993 at Denman Wildlife Area).

Oregon Birders On Line. Bill Tice. pp 76-77. Information on Tweeters =
"counterpart" to the south.

Building a basic library on Oregon birds. Alan Contreras. pp 78-81. =
Alan's suggestions on "Essential References" (Gilligan, et al.'s "Birds =
of Oregon: status and distribution", Gabrielson & Jewett's "Birds of =
Oregon", Eltzie Eltzroth's "Checklist of the Birds of Oregon", Evanich's =

Starling Stroganoff. Colin Dillingham. pp 82-83. Extolling the =
culinary attributes of our favorite exotic deleterious species; includes =
author's favorite stroganoff recipe (can also be used with House =
Sparrows).

Thanksgiving Bird Count. John G. Hewston. pg 84. Less well known than =
Christmas Bird Counts and Breeding Bird Counts, this count was begun in =
1966. Counts take place on Thanksgiving Day and last for just 1 hour. =

News and Notes OB 22(3). pp 85 -87.

>From other journals.... David B Marshall. pg 85. Two papers from June =
1996 issue of Journal of Raptor Research pertaining to Oregon. One by =
J.W. Witt - "Long-term Population Monitoring of Osprey along the Umpqua =
River of Western Oregon" - reports a 17% annual population increase for =
the 1981-90 period. Another by M.I. Goldstein - "An Assessment of =
Mortality of Swainson's Hawks on Wintering Grounds in Argentina" reports =
on large-scale mortality due to spraying of grasshoppers (Swainson's =
Hawks main food) with the organic phosphate Dimethoate and an =
unidentified pesticide.

Notes that Christmas Bird Counts were not conducted for the Malheur and =
Sodhouse counts due to the federal government furlough due to the budget =
