I've done a lot of hiking, and Gray Jays can be real pests in areas
where us humans tend to congregate and eat our lunches. More than once
I've had Gray Jays try to grab a bite of sandwich as I brought it to my
mouth. I've had to cover my face when I'm eating to keep them away. On a
similar thread I was sitting on a ridge near Mt. Rainier and had a Golden
Mantled Ground Squirrel mistake my little finger for food and try to
carry it off, thankfully he didn't break the skin, but he did chomp down
pretty hard.
I'm worried about feeding wild animals, but is there such a big
difference between hand feeding Gray Jays and letting Chickadees eat out
of your hand or your feeder?
