Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday September 12. If you have anything to add call Harry

Hawk watching is picking up at Bonney Butte in the Cascades near Mt. Hood.
On September 10 a BROAD-WINGED HAWK, six OSPREYS, a SWAINSON'S HAWK, and a
GOSHAWK were seen along with the more expected species.

A juvenile SABINE'S GULL was reported September 8 at a lake along Old Lake
Road near Christmas Valley, in Lake County.

Shorebirding continues very good at Bandon where last week-end several
thousand birds included a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, two RED KNOTS, five
PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 21 WHIMBRELS, and eight MARBLED GODWITS. PACIFIC
GOLDEN-PLOVERS were also reported during the week at Coos Bay, Tillamook
Bay, and the South Jetty of the Columbia River.

On September 8 an adult LARK SPARROW was among a flock of migrant sparrows
at Knute Slough on Yaquina Bay east of Newport. The next day a SNOWY EGRET
was along the bay in the same area. The same day a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was
at the south end of Eckman Lake, east of Waldport.

A bright ELEGANT TERN, 17 COMMON TERNS, and a flock of BONAPARTE'S GULLS
were on the sand bar near parking lot D at the South Jetty of the Columbia
River September 11. Large flocks of AMERICAN WIGEON and PINTAILS are now
gathered in the bay there.

The water level has dropped in the lower Columbia River uncovering
extensive mud flats on Sauvie Island. Large numbers of shorebirds are now
being seen,including many GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS and PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS. A flock of 22 WHITE-FRONTED GEESE was at Coon Point on the
Island September 7.

A flock of 27 GREAT EGRETS and a late CASPIAN TERN were on the Island
September 8. Up to 30 EGRETS are in the Ridgefield Refuge area now and two
BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES were reported from there recently. An EASTERN KINGBIRD
was at Smith Lake in North Portland September 7. The large concentration of
VAUX'S SWIFTS at Chapman School in NW Portland should coming to a peak
soon. Up to 20,000 might be seen in an evening as they come to roost.

The AVOCET apparently is still at Baskett Slough NWR near Salem, but is
elusive at times. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK flew over the refuge September 10.
Another RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was at the E.E. Wilson Refuge north of
Corvallis September 7. The BLACK PHOEBE is still being seen there. A
LONG-BILLED CURLEW was at Fern Ridge Refuge near Eugene September 8.

A FOX SPARROW was at an Eugene feeder September 7, and one visited a feeder
in Bend September 6. A flock of 11 SCRUB JAYS was recently seen in Bend. A
good number of PINYON JAYS have been reported from Bend during the week,
apparently refugees from the recent fire east of town.

A flock of 10 SANDERLINGS was at the mouth of Hood River September 2. Some
were still being reported from there during the past week-end.
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were reported from many areas of central Oregon during
the week.
