Dear Tweeters: Based on a rather long residence in the Panama Canal
Zone, I offer this distinction between "parrots" and "parakeets" when
viewed from too far off to make a species ID: (1) "Parrots" have deep,
rounded wings; the wingbeat and rate of flight is relatively slow;
course-changes are few and slow; (2) "Parakeets" have shallow, pointed
wings; wingbeat and speed of flight are rapid; course changes are many
and quick. In terms of northern birds, the flight of "Parrots" is more
like that of Crows while that of "Parakeets" resembles more closely
Mourning Doves.
