American Bird Bander, a quarterly publication of the Eastern, Inland, =
and Western Bird Banding Associations. Thought you might be interested =
in the contents. There were two articles - one about Vaux' Swifts in NE =
Oregon - and a number of News & Notes and Regional reports.

Problems in Using Morphometrics to Sex Monomorphic Birds: An Example =
Using Black-capped Chickadee. Sheldon J Cooper. pp 45-48. Abstract: =
"Black-capped Chickadees (Parus atricapillus) were used to assess the =
ability of mophometrics to sex monomorphic passerines. I compared three =
wing chord methods and multivariate discriminate analysis with sex =
identification based on presence of a brood patch or cloacal =
protuberence in breeding chickadees. Percent agreement between breeding =
morphology and wing chord methods ranged from 12.5% to 70%. The =
multivariate discriminate analysis was unable to assign gender based on =
morphometric measures. Several problems with using morphometrics to sex =
monomorphic birds are discussed."

Nest Site Fidelity, Breeding Age, and Adult Longevity in the Vaux's =
Swift. Evelyn L Bull and Charles T Collins. pp 49-51. Abstract: =
"Vaux's Swifts (Chaetura vauxi) were observed using the same nest tree =
in subsequent years in northeastern Oregon. Seventy percent of 46 nest =
trees were reused at least once, thereby indicating strong nest site =
fidelity. Breeding occured at one year of age. A swift, banded the =
previous year 3km away as a juvenile, was recaptured while feeding its =
young. Two individuals were recaptured at the same nest trees four and =
five years after the initial captures (minimum ages four and five years, =
respectively)." The authors banded swifts in the Blue Mountains at Frog =
Heaven (42km SW of LaGrande); Syrup (35km SW of LaGrande); Goose Creek =
(42km SE of Union); and Sugarbowl (16km W of Union) in older mixed =
coniferous forests (Douglas Fir, Grand Fir and western larch) at =
elevations of 1300-1450m.

Electrocuted and captured alive near Winters, Calif on 2 Jan 1994, about =
1100km SW of banding site. 6 years old. (bird now in captivity).

629-32537 Bald Eagle banded by Al Harmata as L-F at Bishop Lake, Idaho =
on 25 Jun 1988. Shot dead along the Gallatin River near Bozeman, Montana =
on 2 Jan 1994 (obviously a bad day for eagles....)

837-46531 Prairie Falcon banded by Tracy Fleming as L-F near Keating, =
Oregon on 14 Jun 1981. Retrapped by Randy Bachman at Jerita, Washington =
on 14 Dec 1993, about 223km N of banding site. 12 years old.

1830-51650 Warbling Vireo banded by Dennis Vroman as HY-U =
(hatching-year, sex unknown) in the Siskiyou Nat Forest, Josephine Co, =
Oregon on 2 Aug 1989. Recaptured there on 11 July 1994. 5 years old.

1830-51626 Lazuli Bunting banded by Dennis Vroman as AHY-M =
(after-hatching-year male) in the Siskiyou Nat Forest, Josephine Co, =
Oregon on 21 July 1989. Recaptured there on 23 May 1994. At least 6 =
years old.

1760-66568 Dark-eyed (Oregon) Junco banded by Otis Swisher as HY-U at =
Medford, Oregon on 7 Dec 1989. Retrapped there on 2 Mar 1994. 5 years =
old.

972-63622 Red-winged Blackbird banded by Eugene Kridler as HY-F at =
Sequim, Washington on 24 Jun 1994. Caught at Hansville, Washington on =
14 Oct 1994, about 95km SE from banding site.

And, even though this wasn't a Northwest band encounter, it's pretty =
neat:

9C65735 Common Redpoll banded as AHY-F by Henrik Vang Christensen at =
Kangerlussuaq, Greenland on 18 Jul 1995. Retrapped and released alive =
at Toivola, Michigan on 16 March 1996, about 3100km SW of banding site!
