Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday September 19. If you have anything to add call Harry

A research vessel working about the Heceta Banks, about 30 miles of the
Central Oregon Coast observed a large number of interesting birds including
a juvenile LAUGHING GULL September 17, and a STREAKED SHEARWATER September
13.

On September 16 an immature PRAIRIE WARBLER was along the nature trail
behind the Marine Science Center at Yaquina Bay. It was being harrassed by
a male yellowthroat and may have been driven off as it could not be
relocated. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was along the nature trail the day
before.

A SAY'S PHOEBE was along Oceanview Drive in Harbor September 12. On
September 13 as many as 115 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS were flying about the
lights at the lumber mill at the junction of Carpenterville Road and
Highway 101 just north of Brookings.

A female Ruff (reeve) was at the effluent ponds at the North Spit of Coos
Bay September 15. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen nearby. Good numbers of
shorebirds continue to be seen at Bandon and Coos Bay. DUNLIN are now
showing up along the coast. a female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was at Bandon
September 15.

An EASTERN KINGBIRD was at Tillamook September 12. A flock of 25 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS were along Fenk Road, west of the hospital, September 15. A
SOLITARY SANDPIPER and a SAY'S PHOEBE were at the end of Bay Garden Road at
Nehalem Bay September 15.

Both PACIFIC and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 12 DUNLIN were at the South
Jetty of the Columbia River September 14. Three AMERICANS were there
September 18. Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS were on the shorebird flats there
September 16. There were several adult BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES off the
jetty September 18.

SANDHILL CRANES are now conspicuous on Sauvie Island. On September 14 a
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was at Coon Point and 11 EGRETS were along
Rentenaar Road on the east side of the Island. Six GREAT EGRETS were in
Oaks Bottom in southeast Portland September 17. A BARRED OWL was at the
Portland Zoo parking lot during the week.

During the morning of September 12 three juvenile SABINE'S GULLS were in
the Columbia River Gorge on the sandbar at the mouth of Hood River. They
disappeared soon after. The next day another juvenile SABINE'S GULL was at
the Monmouth Sewage Ponds west of Salem.

Among the many shorebirds about Mohoff Pond in Ankeny NWR south of Salem
September 15 were 15 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and a SANDERLING. A LONG-BILLED
CURLEW was in the east Coyote Unit of the Fern Ridge Refuge and two
WHIMBRELS were in a farm field near the Eugene Airport September 15. A
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was in the East Coyote Unit September 17. The
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK is still being seen at Santiam Flats at Detroit in the
Cascades east of Salem.

GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS and LINCOLN SPARROWS are now moving through Oregon
and are being reported from many areas. Songbird migrations are now picking
up at Malheur NWR so there should be good birding there this week-end. On
September 11 a RED-EYED VIREO was at Refuge Headquarters; the GREAT-TAILED
GRACKLE is still being seen there. Two STILT SANDPIPERS were at Wrights
Pond September 11, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER was there September 13. Fifteen
BLACK ROSY FINCHES were on Steens Mountain September 9.
