I don't think proximity to the house makes much difference, what with how
often flickers bash on the eaves of houses. We have one of those clear
plastic tray feeders that hangs on suction cups on a window to my office,
(which is second story). It has a cover, so its not very "tall", just about
the right size space for pine siskins. We put the hulled sunflower seed chips
in it. We frequently get flickers to that arrangement. Its pretty
fascinating to see them hanging by their toes to the tray, balancing with
their tails against the window, and craning their necks to get that long beak
in to the seeds. They flick them up with their tongue, just like they were
ants.
