About noon today an immature Lewis' Woodpecker landed on a fir
tree in my yard (the same tree on which I'd seen a Pileated Woodpecker a
couple of hours earlier). Its back was to me, but I got a good look at
the greenish-black color. The head was blackish, with a small, dull red
patch on the face, and there was no neck collar. The bird flew to a
neighbor's tree after a short stay in my yard, and I saw no back or wing
markings. In the neighbor's tree, it faced me so that I could see the
rosy lower breast, with the light breast near the neck. There's no
question it was a Lewis' woodpecker, but I'm giving this detail because
it's the first I've seen this side of the mountains.

My house is on the west side of Eld Inlet, across from The
Evergreen State College beach.
