Dennis Paulson says that he's seen many cases reported
in the literature, though he adds that such instances
are still aberrations.

Let me add (as an inveterate wildlife show watcher) that
I've seen more than one filmed sequence of a large mantis
lurking next to a hummer feeder and grabbing an unsuspecting
bird.
