Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday September 26. If you have anything to add call Harry

A rather tame BAR-TAILED GODWIT was observed at the Mollala Sewage Ponds
September 25. This would be the first inland record for the state.

The EMPEROR GOOSE that wintered and remained to summer along the Sandy
River east of Portland was reported again during the week across the river
from the boat ramp at Lewis and Clark State Park.

The September 21 offshore boat trip out of Garibaldi was the best of the
year. Among the many species seen were two SKUAS, three FLESH-FOOTED
SHEARWATERS, 80 BULLER'S SHEARWATERS, and 15 SABINE'S GULLS.

Up to 15,000 SURF and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS are now gathered at the cove at
the south end of Seaside. 250-300 BROWN PELICANS and twice that many
HEERMANN'S GULLS have been active off the South Jetty of the Columbia River
lately. Over 300 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES and three COMMON TERNS were there
September 22, a flock of 45 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were there July 25.
Shorebirding remains very good along the coast, especially for both
golden-plover species.

The first main flight of CACKLING CANADA GEESE arrived on Sauvie Island
during the week joining the many SANDHILL CRANES already on the Island. A
COMMON NIGHTHAWK was on the Island September 23. The Sauvie Island Wildlife
Area closes October 1, so this is the last week-end the refuge will be open
for birding.

Up to 12 GREAT EGRETS are now being seen in Oaks Bottom in southeast
Portland. BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS are now returning to their winter
roost across from the Faloma Store along Marine Drive east of I5 in North
Portland.

RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS were reported during the week from the E.E. Wilson
Wildlife Area north of Corvallis, at Finley NWR, and from the Fern Ridge
Wildlife Area. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS are now being reported. Landbird
migrations and out of place birds are now regularly being reported. A
LAPLAND LONGSPUR was along Royal Avenue on the east side of Fern Ridge
Reservoir September 21.

Among the many birds gathered at Dorena Reservoir southeast of Cottage
Grove September 24 were 18 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 10 GREAT EGRETS, and three
BONAPARTE'S GULLS.

Hawk watchers in the Cascades have been doing well lately, but not all
migrants are hawks. In the past couple of weeks good numbers of CLARK'S
NUTCRACKERS have been seen heading southward from many stations along the
mountain range.

Summer Lake Wildlife Area has been good lately. Two COMMON TERNS were there
September 19. An immature SABINE'S GULL, two SANDERLINGS, a STILT
SANDPIPER, and a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER were there September 21. At nearby
Thompson Reservoir An adult SABINE'S GULL and a RED-NECKED GREBE were seen.


An adult FORSTER'S TERN and a COMMON TERN were along the John Day River in
Wheeler County September 22. Up to 150 BLACK ROSY-FINCHES were on Steens
Mountain over the week-end. Otherwise, no rarities were reported among the
many migrating swarms in southeastern Oregon during the week.
