Subject: [SEABIRD:407] Methods for monitoring burrows

I am a graduate student at Simon Fraser University studying Rhinocerous
Auklets. I am looking for a method of monitoring the burrows for
occupancy, lay date and hatch date that would minimize disturbance to the
birds. My current methodology is to manually explore burrows, digging
shingles where necessary, and periodically re-checking burrows with
incubating birds. I would prefer a technique that would be less intrusive.

Other options I am exploring are the using a fibre optic endoscope or a
small IR video camera.

I would greatly appreciate information on the utlity of these instruments
as well as other suggestions.

Thanks!
