My friend who lives on Mud Bay here in Olympia told me he
watched a Mallard hen with 7 or 8 little ones in tow steam
out of an inlet and begin swimming out toward more open water..
she and the young'uns were stooped by an adult eagle..they of
course all dove beneath the surface of the water..when they
popped back up to the surface, the last one in line was picked
off by the second adult eagle which was following behind the
first one..he said they took turns doing this routine until
until there were no more ducklings..they cleaned her out.
and, oddly enough, left her unscathed...
He showed me pictures (not very good, unfortunately, of the
eagle(s) sitting on a piling eating the duckling..
