There was article in Dec 1996 (Vol. 8, No. 12) issue of "Winging It"
published by the American Birding Association (ABA), page 9 & 10. It
describes two sites down that way, with maps. If you don't know someone
who belongs to ABA in your area, then perhaps someone can fax you the
article. (It is long distance from here.)

Also, when I was in Reno a few years ago, I heard about a small guide a
bird organization put out on Reno birds. Contact an ABA member about it.

They have/had a bird alert line too.

Enjoy. It is pretty neat country down there, even if it doesn't have
forests. If
you are going for only a few days, you will find that you can't get to
all the places there are to see.
