Hello everyone -- The Wingfield lab at U.W. Zoology is looking for an
assistant driver to help get our van of field gear from Seattle to
Fairbanks. We have one driver already, a female undergrad who is a
research assistant on this project, and are looking for 1 more person. The
van would leave Seattle sometime around May 15 (depending on Alaska
weather) and arrive in Fairbanks 4-5 days later. We also need a driver on
the reverse trip, Fairbanks to Seattle, sometime in late June. Could be
the same person or different. We *might* be able to pay for one-way
airfare to get the person back home (not sure about this) and we can pay
wages for the days on the road...plus it's a great chance to see the
Alaska Highway and bird the boreal forest in springtime. The driver needs
to be reliable, have a good driving record, and have a good sleeping bag
(drivers will be camping at night). Send any replies to this account
(jespah at u.washington.edu). Thanks!

P.S. Here's an interesting exchange that occurred while I & another grad
student were repairing mist nets on the Physics lawn at U.W. A student
biked up to us and asked us what the net was for. "It's used for catching
birds," we said. "Catching birds?! That's BAD!! That's very bad.
You're MESSING WITH NATURE. [intense pause] You're doing BAD THINGS!
You're going to be PUNISHED!" Then he biked away. I'm glad he
didn't come back with a machete and slice the net (or us) to pieces!
A physics professor who was nearby had heard the whole thing. He
said "You shoulda told him the net was for catching neutrinos. It'd work
about as well as anything else we've tried, and it'd be a hell of a lot
cheaper!" :-)
