If you do make it to Taos, it can be done as a loop. The better road --
I think it's New Mexico 68 -- can have an enormous population of Lewis
Woodpeckers, one per power pole. This may be an early summer phenomenon
but is worth checking out. The back road through Chimayo is
spectactular. It's not all paved but is usually no challenge to
passenger cars. I don't recall any major bird experiences there as I'm
always looking at the scenery.
