As per a recent Tweeter's subscriber's request regarding Bowerman Basin
inormation I am re=posting the following WITH A FEW UPDATES:
>
>In case you're beginning to think about shorebird migration, here's a brief
update on a couple of changes that have occurred at Bowerman Basin in
Hoquiam since last year:
>
>1. The first phase of the Boardwalk will be complete by early April (the
shorebirds don't really arrive until about the last week in April, and most
have left by the end of the first week in May - this is always just an
estimation of arrival and departure times). The Boardwalk provides views out
from the end of the peninsula; but you still have to walk a good third of a
mile to get to it through muddy fields. Bring boots...or a second pair of shoes.
>
>2. Because of a desire for increased security the Port of Grays Harbor (who
operate the contiguous airport) have gated the roadway just beyond Lana's
Cafe. We have been told that no one without a key will be able to drive
beyond the gate. There will be an attendant at the gate to let tour busses
through, but unless you have been issued a key you will not be able to
drive. You can still walk through though.
>
>3. Perhaps not to worry. There will still be Refuge shuttle bus transport
from the high school parking lot out to Bowerman (and through the gate) the
last weekend in April and the first weekend in May. Best to use that than to
try for parking at Lana's! That parking area will be patrolled.
>
>4. AND through the generosity of Wshington Ornithological Society there
will be skilled field guides on SPECIAL TOUR BUSSES that are an integral
part of the GRAYS HARBOR SHOREBIRD FESTIVAL April 25, 26 and 27. Trips go to
Bowerman Basin and also go to Ocean Shores, Westport and Lake Quinault. Plus
there will be workshops on shorebird I.D., life history, photography etc.
Headquarters is Hoquiam High School. We are designating any proceeds from
the festival go toward Refuge habitat enhancement.

5. Even if you don't participate in specific Festival activities come in to
the high school and see the displays, have a snack, and use the rest rooms.

High tides for Bowerman April 25, 26 and 27:about 4:20, 5:10 and 6:00pm
respectively
May 3 and 4: about 11:40am and 12:25 pm
