Our E. Lake W. Audubon (ELWAS) had a field trip to Nisqually NWR on Sat. An
absolutely perfect day which brought out 23 people. We observed a total of
52 species. Highlights were: Rufous Hummingbirds perched in the sunlight
about 10' away long enough for good views and others going thru their
vertical dive courtship routines, Northern Harrier harassing a soaring Red-tai
led Hawk, Greater White-fronted Goose, Horned Grebes in breeding plumage, two
Turkey Vultures feeding on the ground, a number of Greater Yellowlegs, a Commo
n Snipe, an American Pipit, Tree, V-g and Barn Swallows, a Bald Eagle on a
nest, about six Great Blue Herons on nests, and both Audubon's and Myrtle Yell
ow-rumped Warblers.

This morning, Sun., the male Pileated Woodpecker was back at our peanut
butter feeder again. It has visited every morning for the past week. It
stayed at the feeder for a few minutes, then flew to a dead tree and hammered
away for a while, back to the feeder for a few seconds, then flew to a big
leaf maple tree where surprisingly there another Pileated Woodpecker already
there. Unfortunately, both of them were males. But, it is very encouraging
to see at least one every morning.
