On Tues. five persons went on our monthly field trip to Spencer Is. We did
the north loop this time to look for the Great Horned Owls which we found
quite easily. We only saw the three young owlets and did not see any adults.
The young were sleeping at first, but after watching for a few minutes they
started standing up and looking directly at us with their piercing eyes.
Eventually all three were standing so we had excellent looks at them. Other
highlights of the 47 species seen, included:

3 Mourning Doves
3 Northern Harrier - one flew up carrying some prey and went further down the
trail.
When we got to that area it flew off again leaving the prey behind
about 40' off the trail. I checked it out and found it was a Pied-billed
Grebe with the belly opened up and had just begun eating.

1 Brown-headed Cowbird
1 Pileated Woodpecker
8 Dunlin
26 Long-billed Dowitchers
3 Western Meadowlark

We also saw two River Otter in the Snohomish R. at the riverfront park and
two Black-tailed Deer and one Muskrat on the island.
